Unloaded the old Lathe into the garage.
Broken oiler.
Bit grotty, surface rust on things, the shims are a bit agricultural!
Tailstock handle has some damage.
Has the taper-turning attachment.
Serial No K38481 says it was made in 1957.
Pulleys a bit out of line, belt worn, back gears seem in good condition though.
Starting a quick clean up to see whats what
Carriage and cross-slide. LOTS of slop in the slide - missing the gib strip!
Some wear, doesn't seem excessive though.
(underside of cross-slide)
(alternate view)
My friend Bryan is going to make me a replacement gib strip. This is one critical dimension.
Should have cleaned this first. Closeup of tool.
Still a long way to go, but starting to see whats what now.
This is the intact oiler (top part) after a quick clean. I need to find another.
Closeup of the needle and seat.
Complete oiler back on the bearing block.
The broken one.
Progress shot.
Gearbox doesn't seem to have seen much work.
The Burnerd 130 chuck has "seen some action" :(
Pulled the taper-turning attachment off to clean it up. The bolts are badly damaged and stretched.

Removing the drive belts
Cone-pulley keyway shows minor damage from being unsecured on shaft.
Depth of field sucks.
.
The key has seen better days.
| The countershaft with end, cone pulley and key removed. Covered in grease.
Should this be grease, or an oiled surface? After inspection, the inside of the bushes are fairly badly scored, as is the countershaft itself.
Took some doing, but I got the larger pulley and key apart, have removed the burrs with needle files, and re-assembled. |
Rear bearings show mild wear at points.
The shaft is pretty good though, looks worse in the photo than in real life.
Drive shaft, complete. Front bearings still attached.
Thrust bearings? Look and feel to be in good shape.
Drive belt is definately "past its best-by" date.
Moving the lathe into its new home
Missing tooth, but not a major hassle
Back-gear on cam. How do I ge it out?
The cam goes right through the headstock
and can't get out!
Until I spied the allen-head
Then all became obvious!
and it came out without a fight

ready to be cleaned and lubricated
All the reduction gears stripped
The reversing idlers after cleaning.
Filed off the burrs, cleaned up and re-assembled
Headstock mostly stripped
Looking down into stripped headstock
End of the leadscrew - uncleaned, but also unworn.
Compared to a section thats quite worn.
Cross-slide underside
Cross-slide top
Damage to the T-slots
Do I fix it? JB-Weld?
I believe this is the right T-nut
But this doesn't look right.
Rust on the handles is fairly solid.
Part (closest to camera) cleaned up a little with steel wool and elbow grease.
Scale partly cleaned, becomes readable!
End of main spindle
One of the oil nipples.
Dia 5.2mm?
Tube-brush made cleaning the bore easy.
Half-nuts looked pretty bad!
Indeed, everything under the apron did
Thread-gauge wouldn't even engage with the leadscrew
And the main drive gear...
One of the half-nuts after cleaning
They came up pretty well.
Wow, there was some depth there after all!
Quite badly worn. Not much I can do about that.
Under the carrage
A bit scored but not too bad I think.
After a bit of a clean
Along the bare bed
Cleaning gunk out of the rack with a needle file
By turning the leadscrew by hand, I'm getting most of the old paint and swarf out of the leadscrew
Actuator for the half-nuts doesn't seem too badly worn
Half-nuts and gib re-assembled ready to re-install
Whole apron ready to reinstall
Main spindle and belt back in place - but countershaft is not running true
Closeup showing misalignment
Trying to figure out if it's narrow or wide gauge
